Trip Highlights

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest: Follow expert UWA rangers deep into Kibale to locate habituated chimp communities. Spend one hour observing them feed, groom, play, and call our closest living relatives sharing 98.7% of human DNA.

Africa’s most biodiverse primate forest: Kibale hosts 13 primate species in a single forest, red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, olive baboons, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and black-and-white colobus, often spotted on the same walk.

Bird watching, 375+ recorded species: Kibale is a birder’s dream. Look out for the African pitta, green-breasted pitta, the rare African grey parrot, and the striking blue-breasted kingfisher along forest trails and swamp edges.

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk: A community-run boardwalk trail through papyrus swamp on the edge of Kibale. Spot sitatunga antelope, and an astonishing variety of wetland birds, all within metres of the path.

Fort Portal crater lakes scenic drive: The Fort Portal region is ringed by over 50 ancient volcanic crater lakes. A scenic afternoon loop takes in Lakes Nkuruba, Nyinambuga, and Kifuruka, perfect for sundowners with sweeping valley views.
